Backdrop with Objekt
On Friday March 10th Backdrop welcomes TJ Hertz, aka Objekt, to Cosmic Ballroom. With other-worldly productions pushing the boundaries of club music, and DJ sets near unrivalled in their dynamic and bold approach, this is sure to be a unique venture down the rabbit hole and a sound we know Newcastle rarely revels in. Early Hessle Audio 12-inches and his genre-shattering “Ganzfeld” (Resident Advisor’s number 1 track of the year some time ago) rightly rocketed him to international touring DJ status and he now enjoys playing at essentially any party, club or festival he wishes to.
A recent RA “Art of DJing feature” put’s it perfectly… “At this year’s Freerotation…Hertz delivered a set that was both more understated and more radical than any I’d heard from him before—smooth and intuitive, yet totally unpredictable, slipping easily through genres and tempos with subtle sleights of hand. A friend remarked that it was the first time in years he’d seen a DJ and thought: “What is he actually doing back there?” Or more specifically—how exactly did we get from that track to this one, and how is it that such a dramatic leap made sense?”. We expect us all to be marvelling in similar fashion when he indulges us in a three hour maelstrom of techno/electro and anything else he deems wild enough to unleash. We are incredibly grateful he has agreed to play for us all and hope you join us for the beautiful mayhem.
“I think every artist has gone through a phase of trying to imitate someone else and I’m no exception. 8-10 years ago I went through a long period of trying to sound like Shed, and then Surgeon, then Autechre… these days I’m past trying to ape one particular artist but I do try and find reference points for any track that I’m making and compare against those.”
In support will be Blasha & Allatt of Meat Free. These are two resident DJs and co-founders of an all female-led party that stays inspiringly true to it’s bold musical identity. In an over-crowded Manchester scene, they have a loyal, growing following and rightly so. Having booked and opened for the likes of the Zenker Brothers, Peter Van Hoesen, Steffi, a Mord and Blueprint takeover and many more, we know they to be exceptional selectors of anything from hypnotic techno to raucous acid. Check their Boiler Room debut with Ben Sims and Randomer below and make sure to indulge in their exceptional knowledge and DJ ability before Objekt steps up. Dr. Joseph played with them at a recent Jaded in Corsica Studios and has been determined to bring them for a Newcastle debut ever since. We are hugely grateful they have agreed to share their coveted record bags with us. Dr. Joseph & Simon will open early-doors from 2200 before joining the throb on the floor.
In room 2 we trust the long-established Ctrl Newcastle to share their trusted house and techno offerings via their residents Rob Moller & Nicky Mann. We know it is essential to balance local quality DJ’s who understand our scene and your dancing needs, with international selectors. We are chuffed to see these respected heads join us and will make sure to invest in their set upstairs for a strong dancing session as well.
